explosion at the fertilizer plant in texas 4/17/13

insane

yeah like 3 hours away from me. :(

70 dead is the low estimate so far. Adjacent neighborhoods are leveled, and a nursing home caved in trapping people inside… Fire Departments are coming in from 100 miles away.

They had volunteer firefighters at the plant trying to put out the fires when the explosion happened. They’re still missing. :(

huge reinforced liquid ammonia tank + fire= shrapnel and pressure shock.

According to Wikipedia, the plant was storing about 24 tons of anhydrous ammonia. The fact that it registered a 2.1 on the Richter Scale, and was felt hundreds of miles away could put it on the list of largest non-nuclear explosions ever.

the problem with nitrogenous compounds is there is always some part of them that wants to go back to being elemental nitrogen
there are very few gently-sloping reaction pathways back to elemental nitrogen
